What to expect at Justin Bieber's Dublin gig

Pop superstar Justin Bieber brings his Purpose world tour to the RDS in Dublin on Wednesday night - here's what you can (and can't) expect from the gig.

The tween star reinvented himself in one fell swoop with the 2015 album Purpose, greatly expanding his mostly young, female fanbase and coating himself with a cloak of credibility.

The at times troubled star has had some growing pains in the interim, running into trouble with the law and earning a bit of a bad boy reputation, but this tour is being interpreted as a way for him to make it right with his fervent fanbase.

What you can expect....

Beefed-up security

There will be additional and strict checks at the gig due to heightened security throughout Europe. Don't take any backpacks, large bags or large objects as they won't be allowed. Only bags of A4 size or smaller will be admitted after searching. Gig-goers will be subject to a "pat down" and a "wand" metal detector check.

A spectacular stage show

Bieber has spared no expense with his stage show, so expect a troupe of slick backing dancers and lighting displays, lasers and pyrotechnics to beat the band. A quartet of young Irish fans will also be joining him on stage for one of his songs, including 10-year-old Monaghan girl Eva McMahon who told RTÉ Entertainment that she "screamed for a long time" when she found out she would be taking part in the show.

23-year-old Bieber is big on metaphors, so keep an eye out for some meaningful stage set-ups, such as kicking off the show in a glass box which we imagine is meant to encapsulate how it feels to experience his level of massive global fame.

Diva antics?

Although Bieber has toned down his troubled recent behaviour and has been mostly avoiding negative headlines, he might not be immune to some diva-like leanings. Eyebrows were raised recently when details of his extravagant tour 'rider' were apparently leaked online. The astonishing list of demands veered into Mariah Carey or JLo territory, with requests including luxury transport for his entourage of 120 (120!!!) - people, two 5 star hotels on reserve for security reasons, thirteen rooms backstage at each venue, a private jet and chopper on standby just in case and absolutely NO LILIES.

Will the Biebs tell off Irish fans for screaming too loudly?

Also be warned, the singer has been known to berate the audience for screaming too loudly, and has even stormed off stage when his audience displeased him, so keep those decibels to an acceptable level, Irish fans!

Lots and lots of tour merch modelled by himself

If you're taking a young Belieber to the gig, be warned that his merchandise will be heavily plugged during the interval which may induce "must-buy" panic among fans. The man himself will also be modelling the expertly-designed gear throughout the concert. Want. That. Hoodie.

A spot of self-indulgent drumming

Bieber is at pains to demonstrate the breadth of his musical talent and fans have been thoroughly enjoying the acoustic renditions of tracks such as Love Yourself, which he performs solo with a guitar. However, his insistence on performing a drum solo during his gigs may not illicit as much pleasure and does veer into self-indulgent territory...

What not to expect...

Despacito

It may be a worldwide chart-topping hit, but Bieber fans shouldn't be expecting him to crack out a rendition of Luis Fonsi's Despacito. During a recent attempt at performing the crowd-pleaser in New York, Bieber inserted "Blah, blah, blahs" in place of the Spanish lyrics.

He decided against a repeat of the performance in Sweden when the crowd were demanding the hit single. "I can't do Despacito,'" Bieber said on stage. "I don't even know it." This didn't go down too well as someone threw a bottle from the audience. Here's hoping the Dublin crowd are a bit more forgiving!

Lots of chat or banter

A lot of feedback from Bieber's recent gigs gives the impression that his enthusiasm for performing often wanes, and he can come across sullen at times. He doesn't seem to indulge in too much chat or banter with the audience, so don't be expecting a lot of intimacy or crowd interaction.
